Hole In My Heart
04:04

Everybody's so judgmental
They scrutinize everything you do
I'm not asking very much of you
Everybody's sentimental
For somebody that they used to know
Oh, honey, won't you stay awhile
Enjoy the show
Everybody's been afraid before
Worried how to say the right words
Oh, honey, won't you talk with me awhile
I'll tell you something that you never heard
Sometimes I feel like there's a hole in my heart
Why does love got to be so cruel?
All I know is I've got a thing for you.

I Was Wrong
04:07
|

I used to think that love was just a luxury
Meant for other lucky people, not the lonely ones like me
I used to think that women & loyalty
Had about as much in common as common folk & royalty
But I was wrong, you helped me realize
You sang a song of love and opened my ears and eyes
Baby, I was wrong, and you were right
I'm the luckiest man alive to have you here with me tonight
Nothing good ever comes when we argue and we fight
Baby, I was wrong and you were right
I never put too much stock in those fairy tales
Where some Prince Charming got the girl and the bad guy always failed
In real life nothing much ever goes by the book
The girls always pick the bad guys and the good guy is usually a crook
But I was wrong...

Someone said something once that someone else believed, and it was all we could do not to laugh. And then someone said that we'd all been deceived by someone from the General Staff. When that someone turned out to be not who we thought it brought most of us right to our knees, but these things somehow turn out all right in the end, and when they don't, you just gotta say jeez...
It's one helluva day out here on the western front and we're all slowly going insane. It's been quiet and peaceful for the most part, but our hearts got more balls than our brains. Our gear is all shot and we're all talking rot and morale's at an all time low. It's a helluva day out here on the western front, it's a helluva way to go.
Then someone said they thought something was up, and somehow we'd see some action come Fall. But then nothing happened, and nobody came and we didn't do nothing at all. And no one was there when we finally blew up and now no one ever will know that someone said something worth half a damn once, it only goes to show:
It's a helluva day out here on the western front...

Barfly
03:50
|
|||
Broken bottles in the bathroom, paper on the floor, got some neon signs hanging over the door, saying "come on in, you've been here before," it's like everyone knows your name. Bar's to the left, pool table to the right, it looks like it's gonna be a helluva night, someone will get drunk, get in a fight, it's almost always the same.
Girls walking by in the shortest skirts, you can't believe what passes these days for a shirt, and the dudes in the tight pants that look like they hurt, they're gonna try to get some tonight. Waitress is practicing her balancing act, she's got 3 beer bottles and 3 shots of Jack, and you sit in the corner watching people react. It's all quite a sight.
Tonight you're a barfly, just watching the world go by.
The bartender knows all the regulars' drinks, it's an easy job, that's what everybody thinks, you wish the dude at the jukebox would just play some Kinks while you wait to shoot some pool. There's a drunk girl sitting all alone at the bar, later on she'll go home and go a little too far with the guy on the bike, he don't drive a car because cars ain't cool.
Tonight you're a barfly...
A couple brothers drop in from the frat, they're all polo shirts and visor hats, keg party date party life's just a cocktail party drinking all day and all night. Got off late now it's time to cut loose what you having tonight it ain't too hard to choose, a little blow to go with the booze you gonna let everything slide.
Tonight you're a barfly.
(Yeah, you are)

No Way Out
05:03
|
|||
The days have darkened, the night has a chill
Everyone you know is on some kind of pill
For anxiety, depression, or stress
How it's gonna wind up is anyone's guess
(but guess what?) It won't be too good, and it won't be too long
Before everyone sings the same old sad song
About old times forgotten, how it used to be
Before the cold dawn of this new century
You put up a paradise and then tear it down
And then you act surprised by the mess on the ground
You found who your friends were when they all left your side
You say you don't care, there ain't no place to hid
With your eyes to the skies and your knees to the ground
You pray everyday that you won't be let down
You're battered and bruised like you just went 12 rounds
There's no way out of this town
Your biggest mistake started with a small lie
And it grew and it grew and to no one's surprise
You were left all alone to stew in your shame
You changed your hair, you changed your name
But they all saw thru you and you saw all their stares
And it cut you right down, it ain't never been fair
But it ain't nothing new, it's as old as the stars
But the sun still shines down wherever you are
I know it's only rock and roll
I can't help but feeling it's taking its toll
You're battered and bruised like you just went 12 rounds
There's no way out of this town.

Well there ain't nothing else that you need to say
You can save all your words for some other day
The night's coming on, the band's gonna play
They say they've learned some new songs
All the hay's in the barn and the moon's shining bright
Maybe later on if the feeling's just right
I can walk you out, under the moonlight
And we can talk all night long
Folks wait all year for the harvest dance
Some say that it's a fella's best chance
To meet a girl who's looking for romance
You can sweep her right off her feet
The band's warmed up, and you are, too
Had you a nip of gramp's homebrew
Burns but it does what it's supposed to do
It puts you right in the wind, 3 sheets
Queen of diamonds, jack of spades, meet yer partner & promenade
Grab her by the waist and give her a twirl, tonight she is yr girl
She's looking good, yer feeling fine, going round and round & side to side
You better make your move before I make her mine, because, brother, tonight is my night
Well there ain't no one like Julie Jane
That girl can make a clear sky rain
And then make the clouds go away again
She's got that kind of smile
You're looking at her but she's looking at me
And, brother, I know it's not what you want to see
But I'm gonna marry that girl and live happily
Ever after after all

The Memphis Strange, she was a belle of a boat
A swan of a ship, but she couldn't float
She was slow in the water but fast to sink
When she up and went under in the big dark drink
1000 mules, some horses and logs
A couple tons of flax, some sheep and some hogs
Sunk in the river in a great big blaze
150 years ago, nearly to the day.
Wilbur Strange, he was a hell of a man
Sharper than a knife or a rusty box fan
Had him a scheme, he called it his dream
To make his fortune using iron and steam
Built him a boat, he thought it was an ark
He loaded up the Union boys well after dark
They set up the river making almost 5 knots
He pushed it up to 8 and blew the boiler pots
Poor old Wilbur wasn't ever the same
He ran from the river and he ran from his name
He was trained as a doctor, failed his engineer's test
So he loaded up his practice and he moved out West
On the frontier he made a tonic to sell
it cost a nickel a bottle and it burned like hell
Ole Wilbur claimed it cured the fever and mange
All the folks bought the potion of old Doc Strange
Wilbur discovered the poppy plant
When he went to St. Louis to visit his aunt
She gave him a sip of her home-brewed tea
It knocked him for a loop and he said "whoooeeeee!
I may not be a good builder of ships
But I can brew a concoction folks will put to their lips."
And ever since then we've been home on the range
And that's the true story of The Memphis Strange.

Someday Soon
03:41
|
|||
Rolling, reeling, can't fight the feeling
I'm out there howling at the moon
Stars up above me,
You're gonna love me someday soon
Watching, waiting, anticipating
I'm always humming some old tune
Somebody shove me,
You're gonna love me someday soon.
Dreaming, waking, giving & taking
Living at the edge of a harpoon
Sweet buttermuffin, hot from the oven
You're gonna love me someday soon.
